水單一詞是華人地區俗稱，最早稱銀的成色為水，銀色不足時要補足，叫貼水。而後是以其填寫的單據為水單。目前這個用詞在銀錢業已通用在川流不息【如水般】的原始單據上。
因以前所有外匯，均需經由水路，故俗稱水單，延用至此 (Sounds reasonable)。
以前因為信息科技不發達，本國與其它國家的外匯交易必須藉由水路的方式來運送單據，故有「水單」之稱，此名稱一直被延用至今。水單為外匯買賣收據之通稱，不同地點、不同外幣 ，經過交換過水的過程。
外匯買賣收據稱為水單之說法有二：
1、外匯買賣收據正確名稱為出口結匯證實書，又因銀行會自編契具流水編號，故稱水單。
2、國際貿易中若交易貨幣皆為外幣時，則外匯買賣收據稱交易憑證，國際貿易中若交易貨幣中有新台幣時，則外匯買賣收據稱水單，其名稱由中央銀行制定。
所謂水單，是外匯結購結售的收據
水單由來 是早期外匯管制， 黑市交易猖厥，外匯交易大多在黑市完成 ，黑市開發之外匯交易收據
1、水單就是購買匯票的收據。
2、外匯，是指以外幣表示的可用於國際結算的一種支付手段，它包括外國貨幣(鈔票、鑄幣等、外幣有價證券(政府公債，國庫券、公司債券、股票、息票等)、外幣支付憑證(票據、銀行存款憑證、郵政儲蓄憑證等)以及其它外匯資金。
譬如：海外遊客來華攜入的外幣和票據金額沒有限制，但入境時必須據實申報；在中國境內，遊客可持外匯到中國銀行及各兌換點兌換成人民幣，但要保存好銀行出具的外匯兌換證明（俗稱水單），其有效期為半年)。
