近年來，信託行業實現了快速發展，信託行業信託資產總額持續攀升。前瞻網發布的《2014-2018年中國房地產信託行業市場前瞻與投資戰略規劃分析報告》數據顯示，2012年，信託行業資產總額達到了7.47萬億元，相比上年提高55.27%。伴隨著信託行業快速發展，信託行業兌付危機頻頻爆發。
2012年以來，信託行業信託產品兌付風險的暴露日漸頻繁，尤其是在房地產信託領域，信託兌付危機頻頻出現，數家大型信託公司接連曝出信託產品兌付危機，涉及金額都非常大，反映出信託產品市場風險積聚比較嚴重，部分風格激進、業務集中、兌付時間集中的公司面臨著較大風險。
信託業頻頻爆發的兌付危機折射出了信託業發生的深層次困境。從我國信託行業業務結構變化情況來看，融資類業務佔比近年來雖然有所下滑，但是依然占據主要部分，截至2012年末，信託行業融資類業務佔比依然高達48.87%。
由於我國信託行業業務結構以借貸融資為主，所以信託公司在經濟周期波動和轉換過程中面臨較大的信用風險管理壓力，借貸融資類集合資金信託計劃的兌付(償付)風險日益突出。
融資性集合資金信託計劃缺乏流動性，缺少風險定價、風險轉移、風險緩釋機制，所以一旦經濟下行，信託行業融資類業務將面臨很大的兌付風險。而且，由於信託行業面臨著剛性兌付的「潛規則」，所以融資類業務的兌付風險全部轉入了信託公司內部，一旦出現兌付問題，信託公司就要想辦法進行兜底處理完成兌付。
在不健康的業務結構和「剛性兌付」的雙重壓力下，信託行業發展顯得「異常脆弱」，一旦經濟下行，很多信託公司將面臨著巨大的兌付壓力，事實上，很多兌付風險依然沒有暴露，而且在不斷集聚。
從商業銀行的經營情況來看，截至2013年3月末，商業銀行的不良貸款余額達到5243億元，同比增長20.7%，不良貸款率0.99%，比年初上升0.02個百分點。這已是自2011年第四季度以來，不良貸款余額連續六個季度反彈，未來一段時期不良貸款規模可能還會繼續攀升。商業銀行尚且如此，作為風險承受程度更高的信託行業，面臨的兌付危機可想而知。
信託行業步入了調整期，行業發展亟需轉型。從中國經濟金融發展趨勢來看，我國的信託公司發展空間依舊廣闊，盡管要經歷轉型期帶來的痛苦，以及承受來自其他金融機構的競爭壓力，但是轉型也是信託行業尋求可持續發展的不二選擇。
前瞻產業研究院認為：信託行業需要尋求經營戰略的重新定位，未來可選的經營戰略轉型方向包括：專業私人財富管理信託公司、專業的金融信託服務機構、以投資管理為主的專業信託公司、綜合性的信託公司、金融控股集團等。
信託公司都應該選擇自身的轉型道路，盡管轉型道路選擇可以不同，但是無論如何，信託公司都應當在專業投資(資產)管理能力和高凈值客戶的服務能力方面尋求提高和突破，從而實現信託行業的可持續發展。
