北京市地铁运营有限公司其前身为北京市地下铁道总公司，是国有独资的特大型专门经营城市轨道交通运营线网的专业运营商。拥有职工一万余名。
目前，公司经营的线路包括1号线、2号线、13号线和八通线，运营线路总里程114公里，共有70座运营车站。其中，1号线全长31.04公里，23座运营车站；2号线全长23.61公里，18座运营车站；13号线全长40.85公里，16座运营车站；八通线全长18.9公里，13座运营车站。北京地铁目前日客运量150万人次左右。公司运营业务涉及专业有车辆运输、客运组织、行车电力调度、供电、通信信号、机电和线路等。另外，公司还经营以地铁相关资源开发为主的多角化业务，主要包括经济技术贸易、广告、地下通信、房地产开发、商贸、旅游度假、教育培训、建筑安装、车辆制造、工程监理、出租汽车、设计研究咨询及文化产业等。这些多角化经营业务扩大了地铁的服务领域，也满足了广大乘客的服务需求。

按照北京市人民政府《关于同意组建北京市首都公路发展有限责任公司的批复》（京政函[1998]67号），北京市首都公路发展有限责任公司（简称“首发公司”）于1999年9月16日正式揭牌运转，负责北京高速公路建设、运营管理、筹融资和相关产业开发。成立首发公司是市委、市政府深化城市基础设施建设投融资体制和企业运营机制改革的一项重要举措，其主要目的是根据市场经济要求，通过建立现代企业制度，实现资源的优化配置，进一步提高北京城市基础设施建设能力，保证如期实现首都高速公路网络建设的目标。
